DAN M : Can you purchase the screw retainer without the rubber? otherwise this design is a complete scam and JBL should be ashamed they have already switched from this old plug design to a simple plug end with a thread hole newer polespears. The Lionfish problem in the caribbean is well beyond critical you create a well designed product and then put a $12.60 replacement band on it, many dive operators cannot afford this, you should be subsidizing dive operators with lionfish gear, if you knew what was good for your business future. You can get 20 feet of #406 sling rubber for $28.99 on amazon and 50' of 1mm braided 200lb kevlar wrap constrictor cord for 12$ with those materials you could make about about 14-16 replacement bands so on the low end 14 x12.60 or $176.40 vs $41.OO I hope to contact JBL directly about this as I have been diving in the Caribbean extensively since 1989 and the sad fact is we are beyond the point of recovery against the Lionfish. Any and all effective tools for their eradication should bear in mind that many of these areas are poor regions. The pole spear design JBL uses has been around for over 40 years. The aluminum end screw housing that holds the sling can be purchased separately. Its JBL part number is D6001. The complete assembly (aluminum threaded plug with surgical hose) is not as simple as it looks, the aluminum is machined and threaded from aircraft grade aluminum, then deburred, then washed then sent out for anodizing and finally fitted with the surgical tubing. You can easily replace the surgical tubing by following these steps. Buy 24" of tubing, insert the plastic plug (PN: D6201 Sling Adjustment Head) that is found about two inches inside of the old JBL pole spear band, (a little bit of soapy water makes this much easier). Once you have the plastic plug inserted 2" into the new tubing fold the tubing in half, run a small string or monofiliment between the tubing, get a little of the soapy water on the tubing and pull the string through the aluminum plug with the threaded portion facing away from you. Hold the aluminum firmly while pulling on the draw string, the tubing will follow the string, you can determine the desired length by moving the plastic plug into the aluminum so that it binds or swagged the portion of the tubing that does not have a plug.
